Craft: Small Purse

on November 1, 2011 – 3:17 am
Charming patterned purses were always suitable for presents and were a favorite project for the nineteenth century needleworker. Ladies’ magazines often featured illustrated patterns for these small ornamental accessories.
This is a 1859 pattern for a small purse in crochet and, although an extremely simple pattern, it is one which has a striking effect when completed. It is worked in scarlet, black and yellow diamonds. The star at the bottom is black; the first row of diamonds is scarlet, the second row yellow and the third black. A steel clasp and tassel of the same metal at the bottom of the purse complete the project.
The above 1800s small bag features gilt opening bars and tassel; it is an excellent example of the fine workmanship found in women’s crafts throughout the century.
