Paper or plastic? How about neither? Try a Victorian Shopping Bag
Paper or plastic? How about neither? Go green, Victorian style, with a stylish reusable shopping bag from the 1880s. Ladies Home Journal featured this double shopping bag in 1887. These bags were designed similar to the early 19th century silk miser purse (with the opening in the middle) only much larger and were carried over the arm. They were convenient for shopping and held as much as “a pair of old-fashioned saddle bags.” It was made of felt with a bunch of daisies on one end and a large initial on the other. The bag came in either dark green or blue with a row of tassels and was secured by metal rings. It would not be difficult to craft such a bag today in a variety of materials (felt, denim, leather, etc.) and trimmings.
