1840s Day Dresses

on April 16, 2010 – 3:00 am

During the 1840s, Victorian day dresses featured form-fitting sleeves, sometimes so restricting that tiny pleats were inserted at the elbow to aid in movement. Dresses had a fan-front (gathered) bodice that formed a point below the waist with piping at the waistline, armscye, neckline and shoulder seams. The bell shaped skirts were formed with cartridge pleating. Bright woven and printed fabrics were popular with the same design repeated in matching pelerines. Samples of this style can be found here.
