The Full Sleeve of the 90s – Victorian Blouses

on April 24, 2010 – 3:11 am

The Victorian blouse of the early 1890s featured a high gathered full sleeve that tapered to the wrist. The fullness of the sleeve rose upwards above the shoulder, reminiscent of the silhouette of the 1830s. The new raised sleeve influenced the style and shape of coats and capes worn with the garment. Self-fabric belts were worn, defining and accentuating the natural waist. Bodice trimming included frills and ruffles in matching fabric or lace. A high-neck boned collar completed the tailored appearance. Blouses were available in white lawn or printed fabrics in a variety of colors. Featured is a selection of 1894 bodices that highlight this new style sleeve. See the fashions here.
