Art Nouveau Designs in Sterling Silver

on May 14, 2010 – 3:03 am

Art Nouveau was an international movement in the visual arts and architecture that spanned the years 1890 to 1910. At the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, Art Nouveau was established as the premiere decorative style of the new century.

Art Nouveau influence was observed in architecture, furniture, fashion, and jewelry. The worlds of naturalism and fantasy were often combined as the designs featured motifs of women with long flowing hair, angels and cherubs, fairies or sprites, animals (dragonflies being of particular popularity), naturalistic foliate designs, flowers and scroll work. Risqué items and mild erotica were also popular Art Nouveau motifs. Presented are elaborate Art Nouveau sterling silver repoussé smalls such as dressing table pieces, desk accessories and other “curiosities.” Read illustrated story by Carolyn Sunday.
