Walter Crane Wallpaper Designs

on June 4, 2010 – 3:03 am

Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the most important designers of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement was made up of English designers and writers who started a return to well-made, handcrafted goods as a competition to poor quality machine-made items. Crane was the first President of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society.

Crane developed his figurative style through his picture-books for children, for which he is famous. The best known of his works, Baby’s Opera (1877) and The First of May (1881) are revelations in their own way.

But Crane was always, and in everything, a decorator. His illustrations for children’s books are magnificent decorations on a small scale; but his gifts as an ornamental designer and decorator are also apparent in his Arts and Crafts wallpaper designs. Crane designed many exquisite patterns of wallpaper, some which are still reproduced today to decorate homes. See examples of his wallpaper designs here.
