Fingerless netted mitts or mittens were a fashionable accessory for a lady throughout the 19th century. The mitts were fashioned with fine purse silk or fine black cotton thread. Often they were embellished with diamond or leaf patterns. Highly decorative silk mitts were often worn for evening wear.
Fancy silk mitts and black cotton mitts were popular items to make, especially as gifts. Today you can craft a pair of silk mitts as a gift for a re-enactor or even as a special treasure for a bride. Find directions here.
