Pretty as a Picture

on August 12, 2010 – 3:24 am

Highlighted is a delightful turn-of-the-century (c1900) framed portrait of a young girl in a charming ruffled navy blue and white stripe dress. Alongside the picture, a young girl poses in the same Victorian dress featured in the portrait.

The dress is made-up in navy blue medium weight sheer cotton with a woven pattern white stripe. The long sleeves are slightly gathered at the shoulders with a ruffle cuff.

The bodice features a white cotton yoke with a high neck and rows of narrow tucks. The high collar has a wide ruffle of the navy blue fabric edged with lace.

The wide ruffle also outlines the yoke and forms a wide cap over the shoulders. The dress buttons down the back and there are two ruffles edging the hem of the skirt.

By 1900, the large gigot sleeves of the mid-1890s were replaced with a sedate narrow sleeve. Bodice yokes were filled with insertion lace with a matching high collar. At times a double ruffle frill would outline the yoke and even the hemline. Decorative trimmings included ribbon, lace or embroidered insertion, and braid.

This 1900 print from The Delineator features fashions for young girls. The dresses are colorful and attractive with lace yokes, high necks, and long straight sleeves.
