Victorian Decorative Buttons

on August 9, 2010 – 3:44 am

Mid-nineteenth century women’s fashions featured an abundance of ornate trimmings including frills, flounces, lace, braid, fringe, ribbons, and buttons. At times, buttons were as frivolous and decorative as jewelry. Needlelace buttons on wood disks were popular embellishments on dresses and outerwear.

Showcased here are gorgeous silk thread buttons unpicked from a woman’s early 1850s plaid dress. The dress was in tatters but the buttons remained intact. The buttons were hand-crafted on wood disks in multi-colored silk threads in royal blue, red, yellow, and green. Colorful silk covered wood “tassels” dangled from each button for a total length of 2 ¼ inches.
