Victorian-Era Summer Camp

on August 27, 2010 – 3:54 am

Video features a Victorian finishing school for young girls.

Privileged Victorian girls were expected to attend finishing school prior to their introduction to polite society. A one-of-a-kind day camp offered by the Alexander Ramsey House in 2009 offered modern girls the chance to see what life was like for “young ladies” in St. Paul more than a century ago.

The camp focused on a different element of Victorian life each day, including fashion, etiquette, handcrafts, and music and dance. The week culminated with a debutante tea party. Camp included a special opportunity to try on a Victorian costume, complete with elaborate undergarments.

The Alexander Ramsey House is located at 265 S. Exchange St. one block south of West Seventh Street near downtown St. Paul. One of the nation’s best preserved Victorian-era houses; the home offers a glimpse into the 1870s life of Alexander Ramsey, Minnesota’s first territorial governor, and his family. The rebuilt carriage house contains a gift shop. Regular tours are offered year round on Fridays and Saturdays with extended holiday hours in late November and December.
