A video intro to the History of Women’s Clubs by Dr. Karen Blair, a noted authority on Women’s Clubs, presents the history of the development of women’s clubs arising out of the aftermath of the Civil War as women stepped out of their domestic spheres towards self improvement.

Blair is author of The Clubwoman as Feminist: True Womanhood Redefined, 1868-1914, an account of the women’s club movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries beginning with the founding of Sorosis and the New England Woman’s Club in 1868. Furthermore, she has authored The Torchbearers – Women and Their Amateur Arts Associations in America, 1890-1930, an important study of the influential women’s voluntary arts associations in early twentieth-century America.
