Victorian Vacation Spot – “London-by-the-Sea”

on January 29, 2010 – 9:29 am

brightonThe “biggest thing” in 19th century English watering-places was Brighton, which was sometimes called London-by-the-Sea. It was practically no farther from Belgravia than Coney Island is from Madison Square. The fast trains whirled down to it in a little more than an hour, at a cost to the passengers of about eight shillings, second class, to twelve shillings, first class. A business man could leave his office in the city at a late hour in the afternoon, and have time for dinner and a walk on the pier or a drive along the King’s Road before dark. Brighton was London repeated on a small scale. More info and pictures here.
